On 8 May 2014, Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS) organized a procession-cum-gathering in front of Deputy Commissioner’s office demanding immediate postponement of all kinds of activities directing to establishment and admission procedure of Rangamati Medical College and University of Science & Technology in Rangamati prior to the fullest implementation of the CHT Accord.
The event was presided over by Mr. Gunendu Bikash Chakma, president of the PCJSS Rangamati Hill District Committee, Mr. Sajib Chakma, Assistant Secretary, Information and Publicity Department, PCJSS, Udayan Tripura, Central Staff Member, and TrijinadChakma, President of the Parbatya Chattagram Pahari Chattra Parishad (PCP) spoke at the program. The memorandum was read out by Ms Jonaki Chakma, General Secretary of Mohila Samity Rangamati Hill District Branch.
The speakers were in opinion that PCJSS in principle, is not against having a Medical College and University of Science & Technology in CHT. But they emphasized upon the fullest implementation of the CHT Accord prior to such development initiative. They argued that such initiative cannot be held for a well being measure while keeping the CHT situation in an unstable state with uncertainty of rights and existence of the Jumma Peoples, apart from the other considerations, such as, feeding institutions, local capacity and skill, local oneness and especially, the interest of the indigenous peoples.
At the end, a group of representatives of PCJSS handed over a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Rangamati Hill District, which was addressed to the Minister of the Health and Family Welfare Ministry.
The Memorandum signed by Pranati Bikash Chakma contained the following demands:
1. Postpone all initiatives in connection with establishment of Medical College until the CHT Accord is properly implemented to the fullest.
2. Stop the admission processes of MBBS course for the year: 2014-2015 of Rangamati Medical College.
3. Take steps, to improve the administration and management of the Health Department; recruit adequate numbers of doctors and nurses and ensure supply of medical equipments to the District and Upazila hospitals; and take special initiative in the development of infrastructures.
4. Establish a Para-medical institute in the CHT.
