In a press release dated 19 March 2015, Ushatan Talukder, Member of Parliament elected from 299 Parbatya Rangamati and also vice president of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS) demanded for postponement of Rangamati Medical College academic schedule and to merge the students in different Medical Colleges in the country.
He said that following the meeting relating to Rangamati Medical College held in the conference hall of Ministry of Health on 18 March 2015, a Press Release sent from Health & Family Welfare Ministry caught in his eyes. The Press Release reads, “Mohammad Nasim, Minister of Health & Family Welfare Ministry has directed to commence the academic schedule of Rangamati Medical College with immediate effect.” The Press Release further adds, “The meeting decided that a representative from PCJSS shall be incorporated in the College Management Committee.”
It is to be mentioned that as he maintained his opinion in the meetings held at Ministry of health on the 17th and 23rd February, during last meeting held on 18 March he also expressed his opinion to postpone establishment of Medical College and University of Science & Technology in Rangamati until proper and fullest implementation of CHT Accord is attained and over all progress is made in the education sector. In the meeting, he also mentioned that the demand for postponement of establishing Medical College and University of Science & Technology is not only a demand of PCJSS; it has become an issue of all walks of life in CHT. Hence, he stressed upon the need to have consultation with the peoples at different levels on establishment of Medical College the task of which is time consuming. Hence, it is not possible to conclude in a prompt decision on Medical College. Under this circumstance, he opined to postpone the Rangamati Medical College academic schedule for the time being and coordinate the affairs by merging the students already admitted in Rangamati Medical College with different Medical Colleges in the country. Many participants attended this meeting were in accord with his opinion in the meeting.
He also added that despite being so, the Minister of Health issued single-handedly an order Rangamati Medical College to commence the academic schedule. Furthermore, Mr. Talukder mentioned that though the point to include one representative from PCJSS in the College Management Committee was raised in the meeting, but no decision was taken to that affect. In this circumstance, he reiterated his demand for postponement of Rangamati Medical College academic schedule and to merge the students with different Medical Colleges in the country.
